One of my girls has broken the end of her beak all the way across. It is bruising all the way to where her beak starts. Got the bleeding stopped, but have no idea how to treat it. I cleaned it and put antibiotic ointment on it. Do I need to take her somewhere and have the broken end removed, or let it be? Will it heal as it is? I really don't want to mess with it much because I'm afraid it will start back bleeding. I know it has got to hurt. When I went into the run, all the girls were in the back, they were scared. I believe when my neighbor started his lawn mower, they got scared and ran and she probably ran into the fence. Would appreciate any help.

Sorry about your hen!

Thanks for the info. I called my vet and he had a look at her. He tried gluing it back, but didn't work, so he removed the damaged part. Right now, she is resting and I will offer her some soft food later. Feel so sorry for the girl.

She now in the house resting. Has eaten a little egg. I was wondering if it would be okay to put her in the coop with the other chickens when it turns dark and get her out before it gets light and bring her back in the house, or would that just add more stress to her.

I would keep her seperate for at least a night. The others will peck her if there is blood

It will grow back just fine. Make sure you have the food deep enough that she can push her beak down into it enough to get the food to her broken tip. Once it stops bleeding you should be able to put her back.

She certainly isn't a happy camper in the house. No more bleeding, so you think it will be okay for to go back with the other hens? The vet told me to keep her separated for a week. Sounds a little extreme. I thought I may keep her in the house tonight and see how she does with the other hens tomorrow.

Hey, I hope your girl is feeling better. Poor thing. Can you provide an update on her injury? My cockerel is going through it now. Just got injured. Was wondering if her beak was growing out?

Thanks!

Thank you for asking...she is doing great and yes the beak is growing back. Still a little squared at the end and hasn't quite caught up with the bottom. You have to look closely to even tell it was broken. Hope your boy is doing okay :)

Thanks! I'm glad to hear she is on the mend. My boy's beak is growing pretty fast, so I'm happy about that. It is still shorter than the top and he has really had to relearn picking things up. He is definitely not real bright, shall we say. I feed him separately from a bowl so he doesn't "bottom out." When I throw treats for everyone, like cracked corn, he can't pick them up, so I give him some from my hand. He's spoiled, but I still feel sorry for him when he tries to eat grass or something he found and struggles to get it. On the upside, he used to peck a couple of the pullets on the head when he wanted their treats, but now he can't because it hurts him, ha!
