So I’ve quite a dilemma on my hands. My favorite girl, ISA Brown, has Bumblefoot on both feet. In my haste I removed the plug and most of the core, flushed, wrapped in up with neosporin. I feel incredibly foolish, because I’m leaving for a week long vacation tomorrow. I have nothing I can do for her now. :hit
If it had been last Thursday, everything would have been fine. I could have got her back on track.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

Our neighbor is watching the chickens, basic care, unable to do any extra. (My vacation is over 12 hours away, been paid for since February, there’s no moving it.)

Sorry to hear about your hen! Did you do a lot of digging? If not, I would unwrap her feet tomorrow and spray her feet really well with Vetericyn. I would keep her in a dry run instead of free ranging while you are gone, if possible. She should be fine while you are gone. Enjoy your trip! ❤️

I’ve got her in a dog crate in the garage for the time being. If you think she’d do alright, I’m pretty sure my neighbor wouldn’t mind having her in hat garage for the week.

Hi Holliberri,

How did your hen do while you were on vacation? I am leaving this morning for a week trip and have been dealing with bumblefoot for several months on three of my five hens. It's not very bad, some of them just have sore looking feet, pink with no scab, some have small scab. I can pull it off when I'm changing bandages and doctor, but it comes back again. We've been having lots of rain lately. :(

Anyway, I was wondering to leave bandaged or take off? I have removed everything in my yard that could have possibly been causing and wonder if it's better to have wrapped while I'm gone for 7 days. I'm thinking leave bandage off, but their feet look so tender I think the bandage protects from friction with the ground.

Leaving in the garage is not really an option, with a petsitter who is totally overwhelmed as it is. Too much for her to absorb on her first time here.

Thanks for your response!

Good Morning oakhavenmama,

Before I went away I picked out the core, soaked her foot in epsom salt, sprayed Vetericyn, followed by BluCote and then wrapped them in vet wrap.

She was running a fever and I was so worried this would be the last time I would see her. I came home and found her all chipper in her crate. I’ve cleaned, soaked and wrapped a few times since I’ve been home. She’s slowly healing. I’ve been more vigilant with the younger hens, checking to make sure I catch it early for them.

Good luck! Enjoy your vacation!

Oh, thank you! It sounds like she was worse off than my Ginger. This has been an ongoing battle. I don't feel comfortable leaving her in a crate for that long with a new chicken sitter. So much for her to do already. I can't decide, can't decide what to do! It's been raining a lot and the ground is muddy. I think on the one hand bandages protect her feet from the rough ground, but on the other hand it's all that mud on her feet for 7 days.

I relate with you about watching the other hens. It was because my Big Red had it last May that I started learning about bumblefoot and watching the others for it. There are four with varying degrees and it's been going on since May and mid-summer with the others. So slow to heal! But just one has an actual scab, although it is very shallow. I peel it off, but it comes back.

Thank you again Holliberri!
