One of my hens has what looks to be “rotting” feathers and they have been getting worse over the past few weeks. She’s had these for a while now and it’s not molting. It’s not from other chickens, she’s in the top of the pecking order. Our roosters are small and not the problem either. Any one know what’s happening to our hens feathers? I’m worried she will go bald.

Can you look her over for lice and mites on her skin under her vent, legs, and under wings? If no others look like this, then she may be getting feather picked by others. Feathermites also could be an issue, and those are treated with ivermectin. Is she laying eggs? This is a time of year for molting to occur in most chickens.

Haven’t checked for mites yet. She’s not being picked on I monitor my chickens every day. She lays eggs like normal. She just looks scraggly and it’s getting worse every week. It’s not molting, they just lose feathers. They don’t rot like this.
