Two weeks ago one of our sweet RIR chickens (Dumplin) was attacked by what we assume was our feisty, boss chicken, a Barred Rock (Sophie). Her eye has been pecked out. It was terrible. Dumplin has since been recuperating seperately until she has healed. We have let them free range together. When they are close to each other back in the coop, they will still peck at her. Our question is this: should we now remove the aggressor from the flock for a few days an see how the victim does without her around? I hate to rehome either of them. They are around 18 weeks of age. Thank you all in advance!

Wow..and they are hens?

That's really scary. I'm guessing you need to keep them apart for a while. Wonder what it is about the one RIR that has your Barred Rock so upset? I thought Barred Rock's were gentle chickens. Guess not.

When you reunite them, you should try and be around for a while.

Yes, I would try to remove the bully until the now one eyed hen is re-acclimated to the flock.
How many hens do you have?
