I have a broody welsummer chicken hen hatching 5 eggs. They weren't due until next Tuesday, but there is at least one hatched today.
I keep finding that one about 4 inches away from 'momma' and now old enough to be up and walking. Momma doesn't seem to care that baby isn't under her.
I am getting nervous about the others that will be hatching. Will momma do her job? What's going on? Is this normal? Should I just let her do what she wishes?
I have never hatched turkeys before so I don't know what to expect. That's why I figured a momma hen would be the safe bet.

Same with my hen. I think that when they peep when they get cold mamma will cluck a bit to get the bit under or the chick will go under on it's own, I wouldn't get too worried yet.

Unfortunately, it did not turn out well.
This day old turkey chick had very bulbous goldfish like eyes. I have never seen a day old turkey chick so I didn't know if it was normal or not and thought nothing of it. I guess momma hen decided not. I saw her going for the chicks eyes and found the chick at the far end of the brooder.
Fingers crossed the other eggs hatch out well and all goes smoothly with those!

So sorry, I haven't checked for a while. Mother hens kill babies that are showing signs of weakness to weed out the weak ones. I'm sorry your little peep wasn't exactly "the model" of healthy chicks. How are your others fairing?

The others are doing great. I definitely see a difference between turkey chicks and chicken chicks for the momma. It's actually rather comical seeing the little things running this way and that with no particular destination in mind.
I can also see that there was definitely something wrong with the first one hatched. I have a feeling that the size of the eggs made it more difficult to rotate the eggs appropriately. If I have a chicken hen hatch turkeys again, I think I will move the eggs around a bit while she is away dust bathing.
