Hi everyone, my chicken just laid a shell-less egg and now she is weak. She is standing still by herself, with her eyes half-closed. There seems to be some meaty-looking pinkish stuff outside her vent, and it is dripping. Could this be a prolapse? Something else?

She's young, less than a year old, and has been laying for just a few months.

We think she might have been laying jumbo sized double-yolkers (not 100% sure but could this have affected her?)

Any experience with this or suggestions on what to do are appreciated. :(

I am rather new to raising chickens, and am not sure if this is normal.

Thanks.

Ok, she's still eating and drinking. This is probably normal and she needs time to recover. The stuff dripping out looks like egg matter. Sorry if I made this thread prematurely. I panicked because I haven't had this yet.

The pink tissue could be a prolapsed vent. Is it still outside? It needs to be pushed back inside if it is outside. Honey, sugar, or Preparation H which contains witch hazel applied may help to shrink the tissue. With egg matter coming outof the vent a weak vinegar solution can be syringed into the vent to keep down infection, because that can lead to egg yolk peritonitis later on. Jumbo eggs can cause prolapse. Make sure she is getting plenty of calcium free choice by putting crushed oyster shell out for her, along with layer feed.

I'll look into all of this, and will keep an eye on her. Thanks for your response.
