8mo old pullet with cloudy and opaque eye that is now lethargic and no longer eating or drinking. The lethargy was noticed yesterday, but the eye was found to be cloudy today. I’m out of town until next week and there are no poultry vets in my area. I had the girl separated and instilling antibiotic drops every 2 hours in case of corneal abrasion or ulcer. I’m an optometrist and have this on hand at the house. I’ve also ordered Terramycin, but it’ll take 2 days to get to the house. Electrolytes were put in her water and I’m going to have my house sitters scramble her an egg for extra protein tomorrow to see if she will eat. Is there any other suggestions? My sitters say she’s not having trouble breathing, but I’m still worried about possible Coryza.

It would be good to see the pupil with the eye open. Is they the grey part? Her eyelid is swollen, and that can be a sign of conjunctivitis and sinus infection from a respiratory disease. Mycoplasma gallisepticum or MG would be suspected. She also might have been pecked in the eye. She needs to continue to take enough water, and it can be held up to her beak with a small scoop or cup. Besides cleaning the eye and applying drops or the ointment, tylosin or another antibiotic can be used to treat MG symptoms. Here is where you can get tylosin:
