You can coban, cohesive wrap, or vet wrap to secure the foot splint. Padding would be good as well. I have always used plain old Purina or other name brand chicken feeds with no problems. In some countries where commercial chicken feed is hard to get people use a variety of grains and seeds native to their area of the world.
