Help convince my mom to get chickens!

first--how old are you? are you able to be financially and caregiving responsible for chickens? There is a big cost of proper set-up before you even get your chicks. Your mother has to be involved some way--get your info together, make a plan, and explain to her what you mean by getting chickens. Parents try to be supportive of their children when they feel it's not just a whim, but a real plan.

I live with my mother and am not saying my age. I'd have the full responsibility of taking care of them. I have enough money and have been studying and researching about chickens for a year. I have jobs and take on some little jobs around my neighborhood. I've been saving up money for 2 years, and i feel prepared. I have a father who is willing to help with building the brooder and coop. We have 3 acres of land and most of it is fenced in. We have a gated place that we could let them free-range in, as well.

Yes, but the point is she thinks that keeping chickens has no benefits. They do, and she takes the word of a friend who had ducks years and years ago, that chickens are as messy as ducks. Words from experienced chicken owners might change her mind!

Some folks are worried about the commitment of a pet and if the responsibility may ultimately fall onto them. If she's worried about long-term chickens you might wan tot look into renting chickens for a period of time to see how the whole family enjoys the experience.

@black_cat I believe you rent birds...what's your experience been?

That's very true. But we have 3 other chicken owners close to us that keep chickens just for eggs. They are open to us giving them away. If the responsibility ever falls onto them, they have permission to sell or give them away. Our family gobbles down eggs like no tomorrow.

Well as a mother who has an animal crazy child (her interest has waned as she has entered puberty...) I can say that I am the one who takes care of the animals mostly. Daughter helps when I ask her to, but the majority of it falls on me. I do not mind though as I am animal crazy still, never "grew out of it". SO, I understand your mom's reservations. I doubt hearing convincing arguments from strangers will sway her much. You will have to prove to her that you are mature enough to take on the responsibility. Maybe make up some sort of contract agreement in writing. Good luck, I hope you get your chickens!:)
