Nothing. You do nothing. Helping may rupture things further and kill the chick. The chick will either make it out, or it won't. This is part of the realities of hatching chicks. Sometimes, something will go wrong and a chick will die, even when you do everything perfectly. Where there is life, there is also death.

Slightly different question, but I'd rather use an existing related thread than start a new one.

I have a broody sitting on 2 eggs and 2 have already hatched. I marked them on July 6 when she started sitting. The two hatched on the 26th (yesterday) and today (27th) is the 21st day. If these two don't hatch today, how long after today is it worth waiting?

I usually candle to determine if there is movement, If there is or it looks like it is still going, I would leave them. They could hatch a couple days late.

Not real confident about candling. I saw the air sac in one taking up about 15-20% of the space; the rest was just dark. The other I couldn't really tell much, but depending on the answer I might go back and redo it.

with my last broody the last couple of days I waited till dark and used the brightest flash light I have( small enough that I can use my hand to cup it to the egg) when I looked through the fat end into the air sack I could see if the baby was shadowing( internally piped) or moving, or on a few I saw that the air cell had not "drawn down" and that there was too much liquid and with the lack of veins I knew that the egg was a quitter. I don't know if this helps? It sounds like your air cell was a little large??

Good idea. I'll try that tonight.

@StrivingForBetter Wow, that does not look like any zip I have ever seen!:eek:Can you see the chick's beak? Is the chick breathing, peeping or moving? If the chick is able to breathe ok, I personally would not try to assist or do anything hands on at this point. I'm thinking the chick needs more time in the egg. Can you see if the chick is in the right position? I'm wondering if it has not yet absorbed the yolk sac and somehow ruptured it? I can't quite see what is what in the pic. I would keep an eye out to make sure the chick can breathe and keep it moist to avoid the chick getting shrink wrapped. :thI just realized you posted this yesterday. Did the chick hatch or is it still in the egg? :fl
