Good afternoon! I have a flock of six, six to eight week old pullets. I originally was looking for Cochin hens when I started my flock. I was unable to find any at that time so I began the chick journey instead. It’s been a great quarantine activity and am so happy I did. Love my gals. As luck would have it there is a local farmer selling 10 month old Cochin pullets. I have a place to quarantine new birds but am nervous after reading some of the posts here. I certainly do not want to disease or lose my currents birds. What advice would you give for or against this purchase?

Depends on your tolerance for risk and possible loss....and if those things are overridden by the desire for a certain breed.

Can you really quarantine them?

What about integration?
Do you have room for 2 or more additional birds...
.....and the 'extra' space it takes to do integrate them more easily?

I have plenty of room for 2 additional birds and extra space to integrate. I am on five acres with multiple unused outbuildings. However, My original quarantine spot puts my current flock at risk being downwind from planned quarantine area.

After reading the quarantine article I realize I have very little tolerance for risk. I do not want to put my current birds at risk nor am I willing to sacrifice one with the canary method for another certain breed. The farmer offered to include a hen that has not been accepted by her flock for company during quarantine. She got very defensive when I asked questions about husbandry and closed flock. I feel uncomfortable with purchase now.
