Hello,

My male mallard duck is unable to walk. He is crawling around on the ground still eating drinking and swimming and can move his feet. He seems to be unable to extend his legs and stand up or put any weight on them. He was fine yesterday during the day it seems to have happened yesterday afternoon/night sometime. I checked on them around 7pm last night and noticed he did not come to greet me like normal instead he just lay on the duck house floor quacking at me. Anyone else experience this? If so what was it and how can I help him out?

What are you feeding him?

Any sign of an injury have you examined him real good?
Yes I took a good look at him about an hour ago. No obvious injuries and he didn't seem to be in any pain when I picked him up. I put him in his pond just to see if he would extend out his legs in there and he kept them tucked the entire time. But he was able to scoot himself out of the pond once he was done. I also have a female and she is fine so it only seems to be the male with the issue.

How about his feet both look good on the bottom no bumble foot? No swelling or excessive heat anywhere along his legs or feet?

This is just a suggestion since he is an adult but maybe pick up some B Complex vitamins in liquid and start giving him some daily and see if this helps. It is helping ducklings that are having niacin deficiency already. Sure can't hurt to try.

Not sure if the calcium in the layer maybe affecting him but I have read that feeding layers to our boys can cause kidney issues.

Is he eating and drinking? Any signs of diarrhea? Is he free range? Does he have access to natural water sources? Any signs of drooping eyelids or a drooping neck? I'm just wondering if Botulism C is a possibility.

No bumble foot or swelling I will have to double check for excessive heat. I was thinking maybe a niacin deficiency. I will check my local feed store tonight to see if they have the vitamin b complex and maybe look into another feed. The ducks have been on this feed for about a year with no issues so I'm not sure if it's the feed or not. Is there any fruit or vegis that I could give him as treats to increase his niacin intake?
