My one year old Brahma hen is showing signs of egg binding. Her bum is very swollen, and red. I have read the posts and did the glove with mineral oil. Can't feel an egg, have gently pushed on tummy, and still no luck. She has normal poops and is eating and drinking. She sits like she's trying to lay an egg, and her vent is pulsing. I did the glove test, no luck. I also fed her some yogurt, and warm Layena pellets with some cod liver oil. I don't know what else to do. She's the only one in the flock acting like this. My chickens all eat Layena pellets, have crushed oyster shell, and Purina scratch.

Don't know if she's had egg problems since I have 18 hens and most lay brown eggs. Have had one or two with wrinkled eggs but not a brown one. Her breathing is rapid due to stress and you can hear some strange noises like crackles but eyes clear, nasal clear, etc. I am going to do warm bath now but any other advice? Thanks.

I had a RIR that I went through all of that with...gave her a warm bath for about 3 hours. I let her recover for about a week in a large cardboard box. She never did pass an egg, just wierd bits of yellowy hardish odd stuff. She rejoined the flock and went on to lay eggs, but then this happened again 6 months later and she was put down.

Hi:
I use to live in Napa for 25 years. Did you do a warm bath for 3 hours straight? That seems a bit long.... I gave her a warm bath on her bum area and did a massage. She's isolated in my garage in a dog pen and crate with a heat lamp above her. Last night I fed her yogurt, and a little cod liver oil, etc. Tonight when the husband comes home, I'll do a warm mineral oil flush into her vent. She has bright eyes, red wattle and crop,no runny nose or eyes, seems alert, all except for the huge bloating in her abdomen. I can't feel an egg anywhere on her. Her abdomen is still full and red. I hear some noise but I am thinking now it might be bowel sounds but she seems to be pooping normal.

I gave her some crushed pumpkin seeds, fresh grass, vitamins and electrolytes in her water. I have all my chickens on Purena Layena, Crushed Oyster Shell by choice, and Purina scratch. I live in Southern Oregon so it's been wet here but we keep them most of the time in a covered yard. I have wormer but I'd hate to compromise her more with wormer if that's not the issue. Poops seem normal, right color, medium texture with white caps. Crop was a little full last night but not today.

Could this be anything other than egg binding, false laying, or the yellow stuff I've read about which all sounds hopeless? Worms? She's not in as much distress today as she was last night but she's isolated now.

Thank you.

I had the same thing happen with my hen last week - bathed her, yogurt, the spa treatment, oil around her vent, massage, the works

I got one soft shelled egg, and that was it

Well my Brahma passed away today; my husband found her on the coop floor this early evening and she was gone. I noticed she was listless again the other day, and I had a feeling this was coming...In Feb. as I posted she had done this and once again, I saw her sitting listless, and off to herself. I had wormed all of them in Feb. as well as her even though I've never seen worms and the others are doing okay.

I felt her belly and it was hard and swollen again. I gave her a oral dose of mineral oil like I did the last time to see if she was "constipated" since I have never found an egg in her. The baths and everything else never produced anything. Actually I really don't know if she's ever even laid an egg since I've never seen her do one. I think she was in "molt" since some of them are going through that right now. I didn't have the heart to open her up and see what was going on inside, I just had my husband bury her. She was a little over a year old.... I think she might have been a false layer or an internal layer which means her biology wasn't good to start with.... RIP my Brahma.

So sorry for you loss.

I'm up since 3:30, worried about one of my chickens. Been reading through different posts to learn about what might be wrong with Ellie. I am so sorry for your loss. I've had chickens for 3 years and haven't lost one yet, but am already dreading it.
