Help finding what hens are laying?

I got 20 hens from a lady who no longer wanted chickens. I've had them about 4 months now. Some days I get 4 eggs other days I get 12. Is there any way to find out what hens are laying? I work 8 hrs a day so I can't just sit and watch them. Any suggestions?

Check the space between the pelvic bones on your hens. Two fingers space means possibly laying or about to lay. Three fingers space means laying for sure. Understand that as the day length continues to increase more will probably start laying. Don't be in a hurry to cull until spring.

Is there a way to tell if a hen is past laying? To old to lay?
