Hi all,
We have got 2 chinese x eggs in the incubator at the moment day 34 today, one of them has partly hatched approx 8hrs ago started to pip last night. With it being our first time I'm watching closly. It doesn't seem to have absorbed the vessels from the membrane, is this normal. There was some blood but it seems to have dried.

He/She has their had popped out and I can see a foot above / just behind the head. What do I do??? The membrane is really rubbery, I have an awful feeling that the humidity wasn't right :0( and its kind of getting stuck.

What should I do???? I'm so worried that we'll loose this little one!

The other egg has broke through the membrane inside and I can hear it but its not pipped / chipped the outer shell, once again could this be down to humidity??

Many thanks,

Hatty

Your humidity should be between 75-80%. Hopefully you do not have a fan in your bator, either, as this too will dry out membranes. If humidity not high enough, you need to take sponges soaked in hot water and slip them into bator. Try to be quick about it as you do not want to lose what humidity you have already built up inside bator. If really stuck, then go to this link. While it is a duck hatch, it applies to goose hatching.

Yes thats her, do I just keep my eye on her now? Shes been like that since 7:30 this morning its now 16:35. Tols my husband not to put eggs in the incubator! I get far too attached for anything to die :0(

All right, Hattie! She looks good and I think with your help, she will hatch fine. 9 hours is not long, especially since I do not know at what stage she was at when you opened her up. Not sure how fresh the blood is below her chin?

She does not appear stuck, but the fluffing of feathers indicates drying. Good thing you got the humidity boosted. You will want to take a qtip with warm water and work it between baby and membrane in case it is sticky. When you work qtip under, if membrane appears clear (ie no more veining) you can take cuticle scissors and give it a little snip to create more give.

The spot next to her right eye is tricky but often gets stuck. The other spot is the bottom. That will be her back. Work slowly and carefully and of course stop if you see blood or veins in the membrane.

When you take her out of bator, try to be no more than a few minutes. Then let her rest for a minimum of 30 minutes... an hour would be better.
