Hi! I have an almost 2-year-old hen. I believe new Hampshire red. She has a very bloated belly and stands very erect.
I suspected that she was egg bound, so I brought her in and soaked her in warm water with Epsom salts. She actually seemed to enjoy it, almost looking like she was falling asleep. I have her in the bathroom in a cage on newspaper. She looked like she was straining when I first put her in. I since got some KY and with a gloved hand lubed her up. I feel NO EGG in there though!
So I really don't know what to do. She is pretty calm but obviously uncomfortable. Her belly looks a bit like a balloon. :(
Any suggestions would be appreciated.
I don't have money to take her to a vet, let alone an emergency vet. I will keep her comfortable, but I would like to help her if there is something I can do for her at home.
Thanks!

She might be suffering from a reproductive disorder and ascites (water belly.) Hens with salpingitis or egg yolk peritonitis may walk more upright or waddle. Sometimes it looks like egg binding. There can be lash egg material in the oviduct or abdomen, and it might seem like an obstruction. This and the fluid may make it hard to pass her droppings. You or your vet could try to drain the yellow fluid from her belly with an 18 gauge needle, to help relieve some of the pressure. The pressure may cause her crop to not empty overnight, and prevent the gizzard and intestines to work properly. You can usually get a large syringe and some needles at most feed stores. If you try to drain her, disinfect her skin. Draining is not without risk, but it might help. Here are some videos:
