I'm a new chicken mom and I'm not finding this in my books or on BYC. Took these pics two days ago. As of this morning, her whole head is bald. I thought she was getting pecked but last night I noticed she's scratching her head...like a dog or cat does. And looking at the pic I took, the bare spots sort of look like lines that her claws could have scratched. I don't know what's wrong.
She is 3 weeks old and one of 30 I got from McMurray Hatchery. None of the others are doing this or look like this; all of them are fine....and except for her head she seems fine. They have a 4x6 foot space in the coop with red lights. Wood shavings on a wooden floor.
Any ideas what is wrong and/or what I should do to help her? I'm concerned she's going to scratch herself bloody and then either get an infection or invite pecking.

It does look like feather picking. That amount of space is approaching too little for 30 chicks, and at 3 weeks this time of year, they are probably ready for the heat lamp to be off. Also, if you haven't, be sure there are no lice / mites on any of them. Perhaps you could find a safe way to give them some outdoor time on grass or at least dirt.

Thanks Judy. The plan today is to do just that: give them more space. The coop is actually about 24x15 feet and it's divided in half by a wall with 9 other chickens on the other side. Within their side, I've got them blocked off into a smaller space. So they will have their space more than doubled once I remove that temporary barrier. I've left the red lights on because I was worried about pecking but they have plenty of room to get away from the heat and by tonight will have lots more! I'm going to set up a temp fence with chicken wire right around the door while I renovate so they can get some outside time. I wasn't sure if they are old enough to go outside but your suggestion gives me the courage to try! I'll have the kids helping me so they can keep an eye on the babies while I work. I have 9 that are going to be two months old next week so they will finally get to meet the babies they have been hearing over the wall. I'll make sure they can't touch them though, since they free range.
I looked her over for bugs the other day but didn't see any.....but I know some can't been seen with the naked eye. But wouldn't they all have this issue if it was lice or mites?
