I'm brand new here and my husband and I are brand new to raising baby chicks. We got 10 day old chicks (5 Barred Rocks and 5 Rhode Island Reds) on March 2nd. Everybody was doing great until the morning of the 11th. On of our RIRs couldn't really walk all of a sudden. We separated her out and babied her all day Saturday but she was miserable and cried for her sisters. So we put her back but she was getting run over because the others are just so playful. So then we split them up into two brooders so she had some company but not everybody, all at once. So Sunday, we got her some nutri-drench and gave her a drop every 3-4 hours and put it in that brooder box's waterer (they had all been getting electrolytes and pro-Bs from day one) and we see her flop over to her regular food to eat some crumbles...and we use a pipet to give her water (she can't get on the block it sits on right now) and give her yolks throughout the day with the pipet. I bought some minerals for her today and gave them to everybody. This evening, we splinted her leg (it looks fine, not swollen and her toes aren't curled) because she favors it. We're just beside ourselves! She eats and drinks well and her eyes are clear. What is going on with our baby?! Can she get better?!

I can, but now I'm at work. My husband is there with her all day and I can see if he can send me a pic of her so I can put it up. I had taken off so I could be with them to clean pasty butt and watch them for the first 10 days of their little lives. And I meant to put that we got 10, ONE DAY old chicks up in the original post. :)

Here's our sweet little girl. She tries so hard and wants to survive!

What ever happen with your baby here? - Did you ever get any help? 🥺😢…. I’m just so sorry to see this today
She didn't make it. I cried so hard and my husband buried our sweet girl in our yard. We lost two more with different chick issues, but the rest of the flock is happy and healthy. A friend at church needed to reduce his flock, so he gave us two BRs who were already laying. The babies have all started laying now! So, we failed some, but are just praising God that we have a happy flock now!

I am so sorry to hear it; but, I gotta say it’s quite common to lose some. That’s Mother Nature sometimes, I suppose…

We had two broods this Spring, both by broody hens. Luckily, all went quite well (5) chicks out of (6) survived, all except for (1) sad little one who wasn’t quite right after a couple days, just kinda shaky & weak overall…

I was devastated when I found it in the morning on day 3, quite far outside of their nest, cold and deceased. We believe Mama knew something was terminally wrong with it and neglected it during the night by kicking it out of the nest altogether… 🥺

I’m happy to say all 5 are doing great now and are about 4-5mos old now!! They are all little stinkers with their different personalities! LOL!😉

That is so sad! The mortality rate in baby chicks is much higher than all my cats and dogs ever had. So this is new to me. Three babies in about a month or two. But I'm glad the 5 littles are healthy and happy!

Here they all are — (4) Silkies and (1) Black copper Maran… Of course, the Maran is 3x’s as big as her tiny Silkie Mama. LOL! (No one seems to mind it) ♥️🐥🐥♥️

PS — We we’re only playing around with those tiny hairclips; we didn't leave those in, BTW… Ha! :)
