One of my hens got attacked by a dog a couple of days ago. Right after she got attacked she wanted to go back to the coop. So not knowing that the chickens attack injured ones, we put her back with the others and the rooster started to attack. we grabbed her then looked up information saying to isolate the injured hen so we did. her ear got cut so we put medicine on and feathers have not grown back yet but she was looking fine today so we put her with the other ones and they still attacked. The dog attack happened on 6/25/15 and she's been in isolation until today 6/30/15 and we kept her in isolation for tonight. What should I do? should I get rid of my rooster or does anyone have any tips? thanks

Hmm... That's a tough case. You don't want her to get separated from her flock but you don't want her to get attacked. I recommend when she is healed with no open wounds that you put her in a smaller cage next to the flock's run (or where they like to hang out). That way she can get some social interaction but isn't going to get attacked. That way, the chickens get more gradually used to each other again. (When you do introduce her again make sure you do it at night because chickens are comatose at night)

When you finally reintroduce her, the wounds she be COMPLETELY closed and NO BLOOD should be evident anywhere on her. This is what starts chickens off... blood makes them sort of go 'crazy' or in a frenzy after that chicken (kind of like sharks if you will). Maybe you should put a saddle on the wound (if it's on her back). I recommend applying some 'Pick no More' Pine tar lotion on the wound area when you reintroduce her. Chickens hate the smell and taste of pine tar. This might discourage them from picking at it. I've bought this at Tractor Supply.

First, make sure her wounds are healed. If you haven't applied Blu-kote to the wound already then I would too.
Hope this helps!
