Need some help as we don't have access to a Vet that sees chickens.

Last year our rooster developed this lesion on his comb.

We tried antibiotics and we also tried tea tree oil thinking maybe it was a fungus but it never went away.
Over the winter is did get smaller, but this summer as soon as the heat started back up it started getting worse.

It is on both sides of the comb.

Any ideas on what this might be and how we can treat it?

Thanks

Hi! I'm so sorry for the delay in your post getting a response. It's so odd that I'm going through the same thing, in the same spot! The area has a yellowish scab on my rooster though. I was advised to slather on some BluKote and I did this and it helped significantly. I didn't continue treatment like I should have and it's back. I was also advised to slather it with a coat of pine tar and will do this if the BluKote isn't successful like last time. I was told that it looks to be where they're being pecked, not in aggression, but like they do whenever grooming each other. I hope this helps. I'm happy to tag some folks if you want me to 😉

Thanks so much for this response. I will be picking some up and trying it. I have seen some of the hens peck at it but figured it had another cause. I will keep you posted on what happens.

The blukote is where I started and I will definitely try that again. Being that it contain Gen.Violet, it's good for fungus (possible favus) too. That's going to cover a lot of bases, so I would try that first, if he was mine. I'll get a link to my post so you can read over that. Thank you for replying. I look forward to hearing how your guy progresses.

Also, I want to warn you that blukote is MESSY and it stains everything blue/purple! Be sure to wear gloves and old clothes and apply it outdoors. He will likely shake his head right after you apply it and it will go EVERYWHERE. His feathers will be stained too. I applied with a qtip for more precision and less mess. Still a little messy nonetheless but I was able to apply inside. I had to take my guy off the roost in the middle of the night since he's in a bachelor flock with 2 jerks (he's actually a good rooster but his flockmates are nasty)

I forgot that I didn't start a thread for him. I wasn’t sure if it was related to one of my bantam hens having a dry comb and wattles, so I just put it in her thread. I have linked the post where I started talking about him. It looks like his wound is farther down on his comb, but I suspect the same treatment applies since blukote covers most skin issues.

Loved reading the previous thread you posted.
Still waiting for it to be delivered this weekend. Can't wait to see if it works.

Thanks again for your help on this.

I'm glad I was able to help. I'm anxious to hear if this makes a difference in your roosters comb wound. Thank you for updating. I'll be thinking about you and your rooster and looking forward to reading a update once his treatment starts ❤️

My Roo is having a comb issue, I thought it may be fungal so I've been treating with fungal creams & now mixing Neosporin. I hope he improves.

Update on Rooster comb and BluKote.
It has really ben helping. My husband who holds him hurt his hand and so we haven't been able to apply it again and it looks like it is still healing.

Thanks so much for the advice Heather.

Liz I thought fungal on my Roo too.
Your Roo's comb looks very dry and pecked at.
I would definitely try the BluKote on the entire comb. It can't hurt. I noticed it kept the pecking down from the hens.

Be warned though, that is the messiest stuff. Wear old clothes, gloves and old shoes.

I applied it earlier, I sprayed it into a lid then applied to Teddy's comb with a q-tip. He was such a sweet boy, sat on my lap, didn't even move, I didn't get any on my shirt, just on the 2 fingers I held his comb with. I hope it works. Poor boy!
