We got a wonderful rooster at our local auction. I'm not sure where he came from, or how old he is. He is absolutely wonderful and by far my most favorite chicken. He takes care of his girls, is fertile, doesn't crow very often, is very docile. He lets my five-year-old daughter carry him around. He also lets me dominate him, too. Very easy to catch, never aggressive, and has defended his girls from a raccoon. After looking at a couple different breeds, I think he may be a Partridge Plymouth Rock. I'm curious as to why his legs are so great. Does that mean he's an older rooster? Or is that part of the breed? I thought the Partridge Plymouth had orange/yellow legs. We have incubated some eggs, and they should hatch out on Thursday or Friday. His first batch. Our first batch, really. The hands are Barred Rocks, Gold Laced Wyandotte, Silver Laced Wyandottes, Black Sex Links, and Buff Orpingtons. Most curious to see what I get with the Barred Rocks. Black Sex Links? Here are a variety of pictures of him.

It looks like he is a true wheaten Ameraucana rooster, probably between 1 and 2 years old. If I am right then he carries the blue egg gene.

Wow...he's beautiful.
I don't know what breed....he kinda looks like the black copper marans and the welsummers Roos, except for the comb(looks like the wyandottes). I'm sure some one will know what he is....
good luck~ ;)

Thank you all! How can you tell the age? Will his beard fill out more? And is a blue egg gene dominant? Will all of his offspring hens carry the blue gene (produce blue or green eggs) if bred with a non-Ameraucana hen? I've got eggs in an incubator and I'm wondering what hens from this hatch will produce. Thank you!

I am not certain of his age or whether or not his beard will fill out more, but I can help you somewhat with the gene issue.
A blue egg laying breed is dominant over a white egg-laying breed, and its eggs are modified by the overlying color pigment of brown. Thus, if a blue egg laying breed like an Ameraucana is mated to a white egg laying breed they will produce hens that have the genetic code with one gene for each color and these hens will lay paler blue eggs than the Ameraucana.
A dark brown egg laying hen mated to an Ameraucana rooster will produce hens which lay olive green eggs, which are blue eggs covered in a brown pigment.
Ameraucana mated to a light brown, tan, cream, or beige laying breed can produce hens that can lay pink or even gold eggs depending on the amount of pigment deposited on the shell.
I hope this helps.

It does make sense. Thank you! So basically since all then hens he has been with are brown egg layers, the resulting hens will lay "tinted" eggs (but not be blue). Correct?
