Help me decide...new to chickens...2 or 4 hens?

I started with 6...now I have about 40 - and 15 more on the way in April!

It's an illness

I laugh at this question because it's exactly the question I had when thinking about getting chickens. I thought I would start with 4-6 and add later... then I thought about just getting 6-10... then 10-15... we finally ordered chicks and got 26

!!!!!!!!! I'm a bad influence but I think 4-6 is a good number for an urban flock

I live in an urban area, and was originally aiming for two. I can't have four because of housing, but I came to the conclusion that I would get 3. Like everybody says above, if you lose one, the other hen will have a buddy. That's what sold me.

Thanks so much to everyone for the responses....We are still trying to determine if we go 2 vs 4. All of the responses lead us to go with 4, but that is primarily based on chicken fanatics responses (smile). We too may be chicken fanatics at some point in the near future.....Thanks again!
