First time chicken owners here. Trying to plan the layout and construction of our run (and keep costs down). Coop door is in corner of larger structure. (See attached pic). 6 hens. I was thinking of using the smaller roofed structure as a wall within the run. Here are my concerns.
1- The low roof is about 4 or 5 ft high. I'm afraid the hens will get onto roof and escape up and over. How high can chicken's fly? How high can they jump if wings are clipped?
2- Can I have the bundle of trees pictured within the run. The birch is dead, but it is surrounded by younger trees. Top is about 15 - 20 ft. Can the chickens fly up into skinny branches and then out over the run?
3- The coup has a stacked stone wall foundation. Do I need to apron the stone to keep smaller animals out of the run?
Thanks for the advice!

This is an Easter Egger hen weighing about 7 pounds. That fence is 6 feet tall. She jumped up there.

Many breeds can still jump pretty high with clipped wings.
Yes, they will jump onto the roof and escape. Yes, they will also use the trees as an escape route. I gave up trying to contain my flock. They get to free range most of the time. The run is handy if I need to confine them due to predators passing through, but there are always a few that manage to get out.
How predator proof do you want your run to be? A fort knox run isn't really needed, so long as they get shut in the coop each and every night. How secure is the stacked stone? Any gaps, holes, or loose stones?

I have a few crab apple trees that my chickens fly up on. Im 5'5 and I can walk under the branches without ducking...I would definitely be putting something around the stone to provent something from going in the run or even the chickens from going out. I was shocked on how much they can squeeze through.

I’d also be concerned about the angle and direction of the roof pitch on the smaller building if you use it for one wall of your run. Think of how the rain and snowmelt will go right down into the uncovered run.

Welcome to BYC!

Remove trees and put roof(mesh or solid) on run.
Gutter eave of smaller building.
Small critter apron might be needed...for run and coop.

What is your climate?
Adding your general geographical location is easy and most helpful.
