so...

I'm hoping some of you like to troll equine sales sites like I do.

I need a companion. here is what i need , and what i'd like if i could have anything.

it needs to be free or less than 200.00 INCLUDING shipping. I'm in Georgia.

I can ship a free pony from another state, but it would need to be held till March so i could find a commercial shipper. Obviously this would cost more.

I KNOW what horses cost

I just need to find a deal right now because it's "just a companion" pony for us and our gelding.

NEED:

Quiet on the ground
Small enough to not impact my feed bill too much - NOT a big horse, or insanely skinny animal either.
people friendly and wanting to interact.

It doesnt matter if it's a riding pony. It doesnt matter if it's broke at all actually.

now my WANTS

TINY but not a mini...I'm afraid my gelding would kill a mini ( he's 16.3) accidentally... small pony?
Grey, Dark bay ( aka black) , Chestnut with socks and a blaze... all welcome colors.
personality plus.

Both pony or horse need not be spring chickens. it doesnt have to be a registered welsh with four white socks and a blaze ( see above lol) ... it can be built uphill and roman nosed , or it can be a totally oddly conformed ... it wont matter, it will be loved as long as it's gentle on the ground .

It will be a forever home.

You may also want to check with rescues in your area. I bet they would have something for you! Good luck, hope you find a good one.

If you do not need a kid broke pony that is safe in all situations with youngsters you will have no trouble finding what you are looking for...

Now if you are looking for a baby sitter that is an entirely different story.

I don't need kid broke

I do however need one who's not a COMPLETE nut case that will blow thru fences, take off my head with a finely tuned hoof and/or kill my dogs.

My fiance is NOT a horse person so it would be nice if she could groom the pony safely.

the only pony i found in a rescue in my state is a horrible founder case... which I can understand needing a good, caring horse knowlageable home... BUT... I dont want to take on a pony with known serious issues...because quite frankly if the pony foundered again , i'd only be able to afford what I already have put up for vet bills ( so basically 1200.00)

founder in ponies is far too common, the little buggers just seem to like to over eat. Once foundered you will have a significant maintenance issue on your hands. I cant give you specific information about where to go, but I would try Craigslist and then negotiate. Ponies that are not considered to be trained safe for kids will not be very costly. Good luck.

I dont think I would post looking for a free or cheap pony or you will get offers from every junker on the market

If you seriously want to avoid founder, you might consider looking for a older small-easy-keeper HORSE, rather than a pony, as pretty much all ponies are a distinctly higher laminitis risk than (many but not all) horses. Places I've lived, there's usually a reasonable number of older Arab type horses around that are usually "air ferns" and if they have not foundered previously probably *won't* unless you were to do something dumb, and often make excellent low-maintenance companion horses.

Good luck, have fun,

Pat

I was thinking the same thing Pat was. A small easy keeper horse...especially if you have good pasture.

Yes, and that would definitely help on the shipping end too. Most shippers here charge a minimum of $250 to start. Yourself or another private person doing the transport would be the way to go. You could likely save something like what are you are descibing way cheap if you rescue from the kill pen.
