Hi all,
My hens are a little over 6 years old. I started with 17 and am down to 8. I feel like I can diagnose and accurately treat some problems, as I've had to deal with impacted and sour crops, internal laying, and I drained ascities in a chronically ill chicken for about 5 years, but I find this a bit curious.
This sweet Buff Orp hasn't laid eggs for several months....ever since we had a bad coon attack in June. The others quit laying back in June too, probably because of their age and the trauma of the attack.
A few days ago I saw her yawning a little. Some might assume its gapeworm, but I've seen them do this at bedtime for years.
Her abdomen is firm but not overly so. She is making sounds like her lungs are full. She has dark brown fluid with bits of brown clotted stuff coming from her mouth.
Her crop is totally flat. There is no odor to this drainage.
She is a very healthy looking buff orp, and her comb is still a good color.
I'm starting her on baytril and isolating her.
She did have a large amount of dried stool around her vent.
I have the feeling, considering she's not laying and she has no enlarged crop that its probably cancer of some sort. But it came on so fast.
Last night I found her sleeping alone in the nestbox, which is very unusual.
My hens are kept in a secure coop and run, so its doubtful she got into anything unusual.
I did feed them alot of kale and collards yesterday. They eat Layena pellets.
Any insights?
Thanks!!
