I am new to raising chicks and have 8 chicks of various ages 2-4weeks and breeds. I have BO, LavORP, Austraulope, GLW, BCMarans, Barnevelder and 2 SGDorkings. My Dorkings are 2 weeks old and like to peck eyes! They seem to go after my little BCMarans also 2 weeks old and have already split her upper eyelid and damaged her eye, BCMarans does not cry or even try to get away and this is horrifying me to see! I have tried separation with wire in brooder for 2 days and I thought they were over it, but last night started again, so I rounded both their beaks down a little with my dogs rotary nail file so they are not as pointed, also purchased and put in a new black ceramic heat lamp to use instead of the infrared. I thought if it is completely dark they can't see eyes to peck! They don't seem to do this outside, I have been putting them out during the day with the 2 week old ones since they were 1 week old. I put a heat lamp outside with them and they seem like they don't do that outside, but they are too little to be left out at night, so I bring them in when the sun goes down. Last night I had to bring them in a few hours early because it started to rain and then they started picking the BCMarans eye again! Her eye was just starting to open up again, so I am so bummed! What else can I do? The dorkings don't seem mean, just like to peck eyes which is horrible! I see they even try this with the larger chicks! HELP! what else can I do?

Maybe they get bored in the brooder? I just don't know what else I can do!

Sounds like boredom or your brooder might be too small. When mine started getting bigger and they were outgrowing their brooder they would Peck at each other for space. I had to try to put a lot of tree limbs for them to play on, hanging cat toy and a mirror. Let them peck at themselves in the mirror lol

Thank you,I will try mirrors, they have had perches and branches from day one. They also have been eye picking from day one! Yes maybe my brooder is too small now?? I's only 2.5 feet by about 4 feet. Since I live in Cali, I have been putting them in a moveable dog exercise pen that is 4x4 feet with a lamp hanging from the top in case they get cold. They are much happier out there! They can dig and find bugs, hide in the vegetation, pick at plants and fly little distances from tree branch roost to tree branch roost. I bring them in as the sun goes down and I don't think they like it! They are just too young to be out at night and I have been putting them outside since 1 week old, so they love running around and getting exercise. I just don't want a bunch of one eyed chickens:(

Thank you, I will put a mirror in this evening when I put them in for the night. I think my reptile, heat only light bulb worked too because they were all huddled together when I checked on them around 4 AM:)
