I saw a little poo on my three day old Silkies behind so I wiped it off, she pooped afterwards. Then I saw as she was sleeping some more came out but it just stayed there. I wiped that off too. Now she is trying to push poop out and seems to be having a real hard time. She keeps pecking at her back like she is trying to get something off of her. Please help!

Does she have pasty butt? Soak her little butt in some warm water and make sure nothing is blocking her vent.

Ya, you have to soak it or run it under warm water. I dig my fingernail around it to break it up and it comes right off. Then I dry it with a paper towel. Eventually it stops

She wasnt shipped, I got her from a breeder and we've only had her 12 hours. I dont see anything on her vent blocking anything. I am afraid to pick her up again because I dont want to stress her out further. Do they usually peck at their behind when they get pasty butt?

They can pick at their butts... also, in my experience, pooping is pretty stressful for the first few days. Some of my little ones are really fitful while they're trying to go. I've had the best luck on pasty bottoms and constipated babies by running a very small trickle of warm water over their vent and swabbing lightly with a q-tip.

This is gonna sound weird, but pick her up, take a good look at her vent. Is it opening and closing? Kinda like an eye lid... sorta. When it is open, try to see if there is something inside blocking her up. You want to make sure she is clean... and keep checking her and cleaning her up. I had one that I used a very small amount of vaseline around the vent to keep the poo from sticking. Made cleaning her easier.

Don't worry about picking her up... I handle my chicks constantly.

A big thank you to all for your replies! This forum is truly amazing!

Buggette, Thank you for the reassurance about picking them up. We picked them up a few times today and I was worried that the stress got to her or something. Anyway, I did as you said and looked at her vent and watched it open and close. All I saw was black, no white or anything looking like poop. Im taking that as a good sign. I did wipe her vent with a qtip again, she did NOT like it. But, I feel a little better about going to bed. I was too worried and wanted to stay up and watch her. I think she will be ok overnight. She's got to be, my son is madly in love already!

Thank you again!

take a eye dropper and put some olive oil down its throught. make sure you put it down afterward unless you want a sudden suprise...
