I purchased 6 chicks that would of hatch in the begining of april 2013 and they seemed fine until my son went to feed them in the morning and 4 of the 6 were dead. The remaining 2 are sluggish. If they make it thro the night I want to know how I could treat them. I have them in a wood coop with a caged run. And let them free range while I'm home.

Besides being sluggish do they have any other symptoms? You could try for right now giving them a little bit of sugar to see if they perk up some. You can also give them vitamins and electrolytes. If they have other symptoms it could be something more serious.

Possible Coccidiosis, parasitic infection of the intestinal tract, spread by their droppings, which gets into feed and water via droppings. Cocci kills very fast. Some symptoms are runny/watery poop, fluffed feathers, lethargic. Purchase Corid(amprolium) Dosage for Corid powder is 1/2 tsp per gallon of water, Dosage for Corid liquid is 2 tsp per gallon of water. Treat all chicks for 5 days,do not give vitamins during treatment(interferes with medication)give vitamins after treatment.

How do they first contract coccidiosis?
Normally most birds pass small amounts in their droppings, but under proper conditions(heat, moisture, result of chicks living in close quarters)the oocysts(microscopic egg)develops in just a few days to form a sporulated oocysts. This sporulated oocysts at this point is capable of infecting chicks,(gets into chicks feed/water via droppings, which they eat)thousands of oocysts are shed in droppings. Then oocysts enters the intestinal lining, where it starts to develop within the tissue, causing damage to the small intestine and ceca. When it reaches this overload point, chicks need help in the form of medication. Generally the number of oocysts eaten increases the severity of the disease. You may notice some symptoms after 3 days, blood may or may not show at 5-6 days then by 8-9 days chick may be dead.

If they don't have coccidiosis. Will giving them corid powder hurt them?
