When died today she was pale and seemed so have lots of saliva. She did have mites last week and I treated her with Dion and she picked up. I came home today to a very pale hen again so treated her again and noticed she was clogged up with saliva. After a few minutes in the coup she died. I am now left with a very unhappy chick missing it`s mummy. The chick is about 6 weeks old, I have put my young silkie (4 months old) in with it but silkie misses the rest of the flock because others live in a shed and can not trust them not to kill the baby chick. Don't know what to do. Not sure if silkie will raise baby. Any advice would be welcome.

Very sad about your girl. Silkies as a rule make excellent mothers,my only concern is what was wrong with your girl that died. Nothing contagious that may make the rest of your flock ill? Is it possible that you may have over treated your girl, and she had a reaction to the toxin in the drug, excessive saliva makes me suspect this.

Thanks for your reply l don't think it was anything contagious she must have been at least 3 years old and in the last 2 years I've had her I have only had about 10 eggs she never looked the best, she had quite a few claws missing. I think the heat and the bugs have taken their toll on her. Silkie and baby are in a separate coop it's very upsetting sitting with the door open listening to baby pine, const bear to loose it too.
