It just hatched and there was a little red thing on its butt. My broody hen who was sitting on it, kept pecking it. It's under her now so she can't see it, but now it is bleeding. What do I do?

I would try to sneak it out, and put it under a heat lamp, or under a heating pad cave until it's healed, if I were you. Keep an eye on the hen. She may be one who can't be trusted with chicks. Some hens kill chicks b/c their instincts are wired wrong.

I had a chick hatch with that yesterday; just a little globule of bloody tissue that came out of the egg with it. It dried up within a couple of hours and the chick's fine now. The other chicks were pecking at it too......chickens can't help but peck a blood spot. If its disappeared under mum, it's likely it'll dry up over the next few hours.

But...as Lazy Gardener says; if you've got a heat lamp and sneak it out, you can peace of mind without worrying.

Okay. I put it in a brooder to let the blood dry and it did. I put it back with it''s mother, who took it in. It didn't look like she had any intention of killing it, but I'll keep looking. We had a friend's hen who killed her chicks. When will the tissue fall off? Thanks for the help!

Glad the little'un is okay! Not sure when it'll drop off.....mine's still got a little black blob of dried tissue on it too.

Thanks everybody for the help! The chick, Pancake, is living healthy and happy. Her tissue fell off today.

Again, thanks everyone for the help!
