Last night I posted about my rooster who was attacked by a dog. We treated his wound and checked on him today only to find another major wound. The area between his vent and belly was torn open and now if full of maggots!!! How do we get rid of them, or is it best to kill him and stop his suffering? Please help:(

If the wound is severe enough that you can see any internal organs I would put him down. However, without seeing the severity of the injury it's hard to advise. You could try using a pair of sterilized hemostats to remove the maggots.

I'd put the bird down to end its suffering. Just my opinion though. Good luck with him!

You might be able to save him, but you need to get him indoors if you have not already, and work on the wound, get the maggots out, flush it out with saline, put Neosporin or another topical disinfectant or antibiotic on it, and give nutritional support.

Here is how to make your own saline:

I agree, threehorses or dlhunicorn will help you with this. Or do a search on threehorses' posts, or look at dlhunicorn's website:

I didn't think that I could manage the wound, it seemed to bad and there were way to many maggots. We buried him beside the garden so he is resting now. Thanks everyone:)
