i was about to give my cochin rooster, Mallard (yes that's his name, he used to make sounds like a duck, as a chick) a bath, today before a chicken show on saturday, when his spurs got caught in the wire mesh bottom of his cage! i got one out fine, but the other came off! he had a smaller spur underneath, but it was practically gushing blood! i washed the area and dried it along with as much blood as possible and put a band-aid on it. later, i went to change the band-aid, after i took it off, there was a CLUMP OF BLOOD COVERED STUFF COMING OUT OF HIS SPUR! i washed it off again and put on another band-aid, but i was wondering if anyone could give me some advice and answer some questions.
is it normal?!!! in all the years i've had chickens, no spurs have ever come off!
What sould i do about it? will he be show-ready only three days from now?
will he be all right? the spur has stopped gushing, but some blood is still oozing out!
will the spur grow back in? he can't defend the flock from predetors if he's missing a spur!
PLEASE HELP, I DON'T KNOW WHAT TO DO!

thanks in advance.

That same thing happened to my cochin roo. I just put some cornstarch on the bloody spot where the spur came of and that was it. He still has no spur, that was about 6 months ago. I don't know how that effects showing, but he will be fine by then. Just clean it really well and put some cornstarch or quick stop powder on it. It will dry up.

I just had my first experience with 'removing the spur casing'. From what I understand, the part you described as "falling off" is kind of like a fingernail. I did this purposely because my roo was having too much fun with the girls and his spurs were injuring them. After I did it, I used blue Kote to keep the hens from pecking at him and to disinfect. He's doing just fine.

You can remove the other spur casing if you choose to, there are some great youtube videos that explain it. Here's one: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EEJv4KvIog8.

in all, I don't think it's a serious problem as long as infection doesn't occur. I have no clue about showing, and how that would affect your score.
