My turkey has a major cut and I closed it up after cleaning it, but she/he is running a fever and its head and neck is all red. Please advise on what I need to do.

Go to the local feed store, get pennicillin. You will have to figure out the dose (off the bottle) and where to inject it. I had a horse that stepped on a nail, hoof got hot and sore. This, with cleaning etc took care of it.

I have a farm and have some experience with these things. If she were my bird, I would also add a load of triple antibotic ointment (people stuff) to the wound. Plus you know that stretchy bandage? I would get that and carefully wrap a few wraps around her. You`ll probably have to trim it to be about an inch wide. I would think that you may have to extend it down her neck just a bit because you don`t want it to slip off over her head. Just experiment with it. If you can keep it covered, pulled up into place a little, medicated, and clean I think you will be out of the woods in no time. What you want to do is draw that up more closed if possible, with the antibotic ointment on and in it. Don`t make the wrap so tight that she can`t feed. Change it daily, and add new ointment. Turkeys are pretty hot temp wise, so she may not have a fever. I`m not saying not to medicate her, I`m just saying I would close up the wound. Once that is no longer a big gap you can keep the bandage off. It may only need to be wrapped for a few days. Good luck!!!

Thank you so much for the information, I have put the antibiotic on her too and am watching her, I bring her in at night let her stay with her yard mates and feed during the day, I guess I could let her stay out at night now, mmmmm no not yet, guess when I don't need to keep an eye on her wound, Again thank you both so much for the information, this is my first accident.

I had a peahen that had a bad sinus infection (swollen eye area) this past December.
There are a few threads regarding this situation but my hen
just wouldnt get rid of it (over a month of treatments with the antibiotic
tylan with attempts to drain it),
I finally lanced it with a slice of the skin, but not just quite as large as yours.
I flushed it with a 0.9 % sodium Chloride irrigation fluid after the
fluid build up drained. I also am a big believer of the healing properties
of emu oil, so I also treated her with that.
I thought she was going to lose her eye with the swelling she had
for so long. She is fine now & didnt lose her sight.
Birds can be pretty resilient.
Also another product to keep on
hand for injuries/wounds
or to keep others from picking on a wound is that purple (violet) or my bottle
is called "blue lotion" & I cant read all the ingredients but it does
have methyl violet 0.85% & technical flurtural 0.96%.......
We always used that stuff on our horses, too.
My bird's lance closed up right away, like the next day
but it was located between the eye and corner of the beak.
Also her cut was about 3/4" and yours looks to be
a little bit longer. Most of us prefer to inject meds in the lower back of the neck,
never the breast area. Alot of this is common knowledge on the peafowl section.
I hope my turkeys dont get that kind of wound yours got, but my toms have been
kinda brutal to each other lately.
Stay positive & we all hope for the best from your fellow BYC'ers!!!
Please let us know how she (looks like a young hen???) is doing!!

thanks for the well wishes

Well my other turkey guess it's a hen since it looks just like the one that is hurt, pecked the cut open so now I will not put her out during the day until it heals. How long should I wait for the skin to close before I take her to the vet for stitches?
