First of all, I have six barred rocks that I believe are 8 weeks old, the most they could be are 11. So I went into my chicken coop tonight and there was a big egg on the ground, neatly on top of the bedding. It really freaked me out. I grabbed it and looked at it and noticed the inside looked weird, so I shook it and it burst. All down my shirt, in my hair, and on my face. Awesome!

So my question is; could my barred rocks have laid his egg? And if not, my chickens dug it up and rolled it around. No chickens have been in that coop for at least two years. Would a two year old smell bad? This one didn't, and it was on my face. I'm so confused and grossed out!!!!

Wow matteonl those are some strange looking egg contents!

I am basically replying because I would like to know what others think.

Your BR’s sound too young to have laid it.
I believe a two year old egg would just be gas by this time and pretty rotten gas at that!

Any chance another bird could have got into the coop? Or other egg laying creature?

How big was it? If it was really small, maybe, against all odds, one of your BR’s laid it? Having said that, it looks like it has been there for a while, going bad.

I can’t see that well in the photo, the dark areas, what do they look like?

Isn't it the weirdest thing?? Nothing can get in or out of the coop. Its an actual building and the outside part is solid wire, even the top! Its just bizarre! The black part looked like a glob of slimy dirt, but now that I look at the pic zoomed in, I can see it on the shell. Maybe it's mold?

I live in Colorado and the egg was on the inside part of their coop. Maybe it's been frozen for two winters and it was buried so deep it never got very hot, enough to go bad anyway? How the heck did my little barred rock rascals find this thing?
