!!!Help Need Please!!! My New Hatches from Jerry's S' Serama Line

Hello everyone,

I have a problem, 1 of my serama chick started to get poop covering up the vent and its not eatting as well as the others. They are a week old and are under 90-95F heat now.

I feed them medicated chick starter and replace the water everyday. The beding is clean and everything. All are doing fine except for the smallest one. Another smaller one died just a couple days too from the same condition. Not eatting and poop covering up the vent, not able to "poop".

What I did was to wash it with warm water so the poop can soften and take it out, nevertheless, the building will come back again. From what I can examine, it could be from the lack of uric acid...but how am I suppose to hydrate that one chick?

Kinda lost right now. Any recommendation would help because I woud hate to lose any more of these precious little ones.

I know it sounds weird, but when one of my chicks did that I removed the crusted poo and then smeared bacon grease all over it's backside. It helped a LOT and it survived.

I would put the sick chicks in a seperate brooder try to get some electrolytes into them, maybe mash up some boiled egg yolk, keep there butts as clean as possible and maybe try some probios. good luck with the little ones. I love my seramas but man they make me sit on pin and needles the first few days.

Use something like vaseline or olive oil to smear around the vent after you get done cleaning it - that will help keep the tissues from being irritated and also help keep the next poop from sticking.

I'd also isolate the ones giving you problems and watch them VERY carefully.

Also check the temps in the brooder. Being a bit on the chilly side can increase the likelyhood of pasting up.

I have found adding a tsp of ACV to the water to help and I grind the food fine for the baby seramas. I also add a small amount of DE if they are getting pasty butt bad. It seems to help the poo be drier and not stick. I have about 100 of them in the house at the moment. I clean the waterers about 3 times a day while they are tiny- but I get lazier when they are bigger and the waterer can go on a brick and stays cleaner. I also sometimes as a tiny bit of oatmeal and chickgrains to the chickstarter, like 1/4 c. oatmeal, 1/4 c. chickgrains, 1 tsp DE, 2 C chickstarter all ground finely in my coffee grinder and mixed together. seems to work well. I seldom lose a baby.occasionally I add a little hulled sunflower too. and a little teensy bit of sand or chick grit.

* Update *

The little fellow is doing better now. Its been a day and his vent is clean. Now I wonder if he even popped. Haha. I would be worried if he stopped because thats bad but from what I see, he should do better. He is running around, fighting for food, sleep with the crowd, etc.
