So I built a great little coop that would have been perfect for normal chickens. But when I got my chicks they only had "black giants" left... So I asked how big would they get and the clerk said medium to large. Ok I could deal with that so I took 4 of them and 2 meat chickens home. So some time passed and they are ready to go outside. They are fine in the little coop. But I was looking in to how large of run I would want to make and that is when I googled "Black Giants: which I find out are Jersey Giants the super sized chicken. After having a OH CRAP! moment, I read up on them and found out I like what I was reading. But my little coop would not be ok for them when they are full size.

SO I need some help designing a coop for Jersey Giants. I have a large area (20X40) that has nothing on it and can be used for the chickens, but I have no clue as to what type of coop and run these huge chickens will need. If you have any advise I would love some!!

Rexiel-We found ourselves in a similar situation! My son fell in love with the Jersey Giants and we ended up getting 2 cute little fuzzballs (not little for long...lol). We had not built our coop yet so we started doing research. We realized our original plan would need to be modified. We added 2 large nest boxes (4 total for our 9 girls) that would only be about 4 inches off the ground. The bottom two are 18x16 and 24" deep. We were hoping to get 18x18 per the recommendations on this site but the space and plan just wouldn't accommodate but I think they will be big enough. I have heard that the roosts should only be about 1 foot off the ground for JG's. We also made our hen door taller so it is roughly 18x15. Everything is bigger! We have a mixed flock but our JG's are very sweet and a bit shy. Good luck and let me know if you have further questions.

I think the clerk needed to put a sign up saying HUGE JUMBO Chickens! I wonder how many people wont notice till their chicks won't stop growing. But I think they will be the best chicken for us.

Thanks so much. My meat chickens will get the small coop and can make another larger one that will work for the JGs.

What type of Layout for the coop is best for them?

This is the style of my other coop but with a large run.
