Hello everyone,
I started raising chickens for a few months now and all of them have been fine until today. I started with three chickens and after two months introduced two more chickens. They have been doing fine. Today, I noticed by heavier chicken was slow, lathargic, walking slow and just standing there.
What is wrong? Need advice.

Julie

How long have the new ones been living with your older ones?

How new are they?

Could be showing signs of Cocci.
Corid will treat Cocci and it can be found at most feed stores.

I'd bet you are dealing with Cocci.
Can you collect some fresh poop and run it to a vet's office tomorrow morning to have them check for Cocci?

Look for any symptoms, such as runny poop with mucus or blood bits, runny nostrils or draining eyes with bubbles, sneezing, noisy breathing. Check crop in right upper chest where food is stored after eating, for crop being full and hard or puffy. Check for mites and lice on skin around vents, under wings, and around neck. Coccidiosis can be commonin young birds, immunosupressed birds, and thise new to different soil. Try to get them drinking water with electrolytes or give Gatorade or Pedialyte. What feed are you giving?

So Julie, when you get more chickens, you need to separate them from your flock (it is recommended for 30 days) because the chickens you bring in could be carrying something. There are people on here that have wiped out their entire flock, I think the biggest wipeout I've read about was something like 30 chickens. We all love them and think the new ones we bring in are cute too, but even at the feed store or hatchery or friend who gives them to you, they all have different environments, those chickens could have been exposed to who knows what. Sorry you're going through this but then again you have now learned about Cocci and Corid, so that could help you in the future. :hugs
