Last night I became the owner of two one week old pekin(sp) ducks, mainly BC my toddler fell in love and I suppose I did too. Right now they are in a safe warm brooder in my living room. My husband is freaking out about cellamenalla poisoning. When they teach adult age I have a farm for them to gfo to, until then they are my responsibility. Are they safe? I need any and all information. I know the basics. But I am constantly washing and sanitizing my hands. If my daughter touches their brooder she is doused in sanitizer from head to toe, plz tell me that is overboard!

If you are concerned about salmonella, you could have the ducklings tested.

While salmonella is around, I try not to worry too too much. At the same time, with a toddler, you've got the two concerns of hygiene (or lack thereof - everything in the mouth), and a still-developing immune system.

I would call the vet and see if they can do a test without risking the health of the ducklings.

Regarding future plans, I just want to share my thoughts. Are the ducklings going to be pets, then treated like livestock? You can probably tell I am a little worried about that.

I want them as my pets. I can't see me giving them up. I'm just worried about when they get big, I can't keep them in my living room then. We are looking for a new place but that could take months and from what I read it doesn't take very long for the ducks to reach maturity, I want to do whatever's in their best interest. The one duckling is very noisy and squeaks a lot, is she alright? I think she just gets excited or yells when she needs something. As for hygiene, I'm a very clean person. I plan on moving them out of the living room once they get comfortable with me. But for now I think they are in the best place.
