I brought home six mallard ducklings today from the post office. One died within two hours. Approx. six hours later I am nursing one by giving him sugar water every half hour by the teaspoon. He just drank on his own but has a very hard time walking. A piece of tape was placed around his leg and was restricting his balance I hope this will help him walk and stand. I am greatly concerned about all of them. If anyone has a suggestion I would greatly appreciate. Tom

I'm sorry to hear that.

Today I got some bantam chicks and one was really weak and not drinking. I held him under my shirt, gave him sugar water, and kept him with me for a few hours. I then put him back with his siblings, and he seems all the way better! I guess I'll see in the morning, but my point is, if your duckie can get some good vitamins and sugar into his system, he may just make a turn around and fully recover.

Best of luck!

The things Amiga mentioned are perfect, but if you can't get those there at a pet store or feed store, unflavored Pedialyte will also work. You can get that at grocery or drug stores. Ducklings can have a hard time walking simply from weakness. You can also give them a drop (one drop) of Polyvisol without iron, which is also easy to find anywhere locally, once every eight hours. You don't want to overdo that since more is not better. Give them a drink afterward to make sure they swallow if you use the Polyvisol.

I hope your chick survives the night. I have been giving the little sick duck that is still alive sugar water. He finally, started eating a little. I guess like you I will just to wait tell morning. II hope we both have good news in the morning. Tom

Thank you for the gro gel tip. The brooder is 90 degrees. The remaining four seem quite happy. Tom

Thank you for the tip on a Pedialyte type substance. It seems safer than safer than sugar and water. Its 1:00 a.m. here in Spokane but I'll go looking right now. Tom

We Must be doing something right my duckling made it through the night. I thank you and everybody at B.Y.C. for thier kindness and suggestions. Tom
