Yesterday I put my 12 week old cochins in the coop and run with the older ones. I sat there for a long time and just watched to make sure they were all going to get along. My 9 year old daughter sat out there with me. She said look mom your black cochin ( 1 year old ) just pooped out a double yolker with no shell! At first I didn't believe her, but I saw it too!

No shell, not even a soft one. So today I went out early just to watch her, again no shell. I always thought some thing was not right because she never layed. But now I think she lays these eggs with no shell and the other chickens eat it. What's wrong with her? My husband thinks it's funny. He wants me to throw a frying pan under her before it hits the ground. "Don't waste a double yolker!" Should we feed her something besides lay pellets?

I am no chicken expert here, but sounds like a lack of calcium in her diet. Or she is not able to produce shells, which would be sort of odd. I make sure I have plenty of Oyster Shell available to my hens. I have had some "soft" shells when they first started to lay eggs. But now they all seem to be having nice hard shells.

Giving them some cottage cheese, or even some greens from the garden or kitchen scraps of foods that are high in calcium may help.

Or she just might have a genetic defect. I would try to make sure she is getting enough calcium.
