This chick looks like it has pasty butt. The membrane was stuck to it and has shell pieces stuck to it. One other hatched today and is eating the shells off it. Can I help get it off??

To take off the pieces of shell on the chick's back use a bit of warm water on a towel/cotton swab/paper towel.
The one in photo looks more like it's the navel.
Do never pull anything from the navel, it will likely kill the chick. (The vent it's right under the tail, the navel it's more towards the belly)

I would let it dry and fluffy first.. It can happen & it will come off as it dries. If it doesn't then take a damp cloth and wipe it.

We had a chick we ordered from a hatchery come to us with a piece of shell stuck to it still, we named her Shelly 🤣

FYI chicks don't get pasty butt at hatch time. The first poops are bright green.
