I have a flock of assorted LF breeds, and a handful of bantams. I started noticing some weird feather loss on a bird or two, right on the base of their backs, where the tail just starts to go upwards. (not a good description probably) sorry. At first I thought maybe the beginnings of a molt, or perhaps it was from the rooster mounting her. But now that spring is here, I can observe them better and for longer periods of time, and they are biting their own feathers out in a fury. they twist around and naw. (sp) And it is not just a couple, its like more then half. One bantam frizzle is almost naked now. just her upper half is left. I know I need to pick them up and really examine to see what I can determine is going on but I figured before I do that, Id ask you all for some tips and things to look for, and what it would mean...etc. It breaks my heart to see them suffer, Id appreciate any replies or pieces of advice. Thank you all so much.

Mites or Lice? I'd get some poultry dust and dust each one...coop too.

It sounds as if they may have a louse or mite infestation. You are right, you need to physically examine and delouse them if necessary.

In addition to inspecting and delousing, do they have an area to dust bathe?

Yes they do.
Is that base of the tail area common with lice? its right there with all of them, except my frizzle who is in bigger trouble.
