Well, I did it.

I believe you did the right thing.

I wish I would have been home today...I feel that I have let you down

Please, if it is at all possible, have the bird necropsied. It can mean the difference in how you house and raise birds for the rest of the time.

Here's some things that you can do to help keep losses at a minimum...remember, apparently I have been dealt the worst Marek's strain possible..you may never have another loss!!!

Keep stress at a minimum...keep everything as close to the same as possible. No drastic food changes or housing changes...every change that needs to be made, make it slow and easy.

Disinfect everything with clorox. If you can get some Oxine, that's even better since you can even spray the birds directly with it.

If you have any questions, feel free to PM me at any time. I feel just so rotten for not being around today to help you out.

I am so sorry for your loss and that you had to take care of it yourself, tell your son that I'm sorry for his loss also..if he's like mine, it will hit him hard

Dont beat yourself up over it. Your help was hugely helpful. And I now have much more knowledge than I started with. From now on i will be keeping a sharper eye out for anything that might be a sign of further illness. I really do appreciate your help and I am truly thankful for all the insight and information you gave me. I am now armed with a better understanding of what to watch for and expect.

Heck, it might have been something completely different, but in the end I had to make the decision. It was very difficult to do and I felt absolutely horrible in letting him go, but I think it was the right thing. One loss is better than 100% loss.

I will miss him.

I cant seem to find a supplier for Oxine in my area, and the online places are in the states. I am going to have to see if i can get some from my local vet.

I miss his little fluffy head and big doe eyes!!

Here is a picture of me with four silkie roos that I raised from day olds..they were all right as rain, 8 months old...I thought they were past having to worry about where Marek's is concerned..within the next 2 - 3 weeks I lost all but the one tucked under my left arm. I was devastated. They were the absolute sweetest foursome ever...one of them had the prettiest crow. He was the first to die. I still miss them. I can almost not look at this pic anymore.

Marek's Disease...you can find several good threads on here that will explain alot. Or, you can search for Seminolewind...she has alot of good information on her profile about Marek's.

You have some pretty babies, Im sorry you lost them! They have such a sweet mamma, Im sure they loved you very much, as much as you loved them!

That could be, but I did think about it and decided that its better not to find out otherwise.

My little roo Buster might have pecked him pretty hard on the head and caused him to have some trouble. Buster is a little punk, but Juicy was always thumping chests with him. I had no idea that silkies had open skulls until recently. It could be Buster got too rough and injured and bruises Juicy's little noodle.
