Hi, I’m looking for help with a pekin duck that was brought to me over the weekend. She is about 4 months old. Her former “owners” moved from their home in the city and when they did, they dug a hole in the backyard, filled it with water and left the duck. A handicapped gentleman has been caring for her, but he was sneaking her into his group home. They finally told him that he could not do this any longer so his sister brought her to me.

My ducks are free-range during the day and curious about her but she is used to a lot of human interaction and she cries all day. I’m gone 13-14 hours a day and she is just so pitiful. I don’t think I can care for her properly. Can you please help or direct me to someone who can? In exchange, I would be glad to adopt some Pekins who need a home but are a little more independent. My heart is breaking for this poor girl.

I really despise people who do things like this. It’s so heartbreaking.

Thank you,

Welcome to the Duck Forum! Glad you took her in

There is a Rehoming forum

https://www.backyardchickens.com/f/16182/animals-in-need-of-free-re-homing

and a buy sell trade

https://www.backyardchickens.com/f/34/other-poultry-birds-hatching-eggs

just specify she is a pet

Please keep us posted here on the Duck Forum! If you can upload a photo that would be nice.

Where are you? What are the chances you are anywhere near Southern Maine. I'd take her in a heartbeat. I am home full time and have 9 other ducks.

I'm in southern Ohio :( You would be quite a drive (although I love Maine!).

My husband is feeling more positive about her chances to integrate. I am hopeful he's right! She's a great girl. Just very sad.

Only ducks imprinted on humans have it rough when they learn the aren't human. That's great new that there is hope she'll fit in eventually, takes time but will be worth it not to have to be moved again.

First of all I think your awesome for taking her. Leaving a pet behind is in my opinion one of the lowest things someone can do shes obviously human attached. If you can integrate her it would be really good for her. Hope all works out please keep us updated cause this really breaks my heart.
