Hi,
My name is Staci.
My family and I new to chickens. We moved in Dec. bought some baby chicks in Feb (we live in AZ) they have been thriving...they are about 6+ mo old. We had 2 hens, and one Roo.
I am currently away from home, our house sitter called me today. He said when he went over this morning our Roo was fine...strutting around with his girls. Making noises, drinking water, pecking the feed that was tossed down to them.
This afternoon/evening he went back to give them new water. The Roo was laying on the ground panting, blinking his eyes with mucus-y looking stuff coming out of his beak. He died with in minutes of our friend being at our house. No telling how long the poor Roo was sick today.
What if anyone has any idea do you think was wrong? Do you think the girls will get sick?
We have a dog too. He is currently at the house sitters home and hasn't been to the house today at all. Our cats are inside. Do you think I should worry about them or our kids being around the chickens?
Is there any way to find out what is wrong with the dead bird?
What do I do with the dead bird?
Our Lab killed one of the chickens a while back and our neighbor told us to put it in the desert for the coyotes. Is this a bad idea if the chicken/roo was sick?
HELP!!!!
Hopelessly worried in AZ...
