My friends and I are doing a science project where we are hatching chicken eggs and the first one to hatch has red on its butt and some white. We have no clue what to do. There seems to be some excess something on it too. PLEASE HELP!!!!! We really want this little guy to be okay!

Hi and welcome to BYC from northern Michigan

Don't do anything. It is normal for there to be some gelatinous material, and even a little blood, during a normal hatch. Leave the incubator closed at all times, or you risk drying out the other chicks and decreasing your hatch numbers.

The white is probably poop. The red could be leftover yolk sac or his belly button. Notice that the belly button is on the underside of his tummy and his vent (bum-hole) is more toward where his tail will be. Whatever it is, do not pick at it or try to remove it. If the white is poop, wipe it off with a moist paper towel.

Right before you to responded my friend tried to wipe the stuff off. Will the chick be okay???

As long as he's not bleeding he may be o-kay. Did you determine if it was his belly button or coming from his vent? If you have any antibiotic ointment, place a little on the red bump.
