i need help to determan how much wood i would need for a 12'x8' coop got to go bigger just got 21 more chicks today so all 43 or so birds ant going to fit in a 8'x8' coop well i know the walls are going to be 2x4s the floor is going to be 2x8s with osb on top of the and walls and roof, i am going to put it up on runners so if i move a can pull it up on a trailer and take it to the new house and i need windows well help out if you can

Using the rule of thumb of 4 square feet per chicken, 43 chickens would require 172 square feet of coop. A coop 8x20 with 4 foot walls would almost meet that need. For such a coop, you would need roughly: 2x8 - 132 feet, 2x4 - 448 feet, wall, floor, and roof deck 544 square feet. This would assume studs and joists on 24 inch centers, due to the decreased load from the light weight occupants. Add 15 to 20 % to this to allow for waste.

The design for building a system of runners and the associated structural modifications necessary for it to survive being pulled up onto a trailer is beyond my ken. It might make sense to consider building it on top of an old trailer to facilitate its being moved.

Hope this helps.

He only needs calculations for an 8x12...he already has an 8x8 that is still usable...LOL
