Around 3pm yesterday my 5 year son old thought he would help one of my duck eggs to hatch!!!! he said he could see the egg moving in the bator. So to my horror I caught him the act and found a right mess! The chick was on its 28th day of bating but still had a large yolk sack attached, there was also quite a bit of blood where he had been removed from its shell. It's now been a long 12 hours and he's been left in the bator this entire time. His yolk sack has been absorbed but he's now left with quite a big scab on his belly button. Please advise me if you can on the best procedure to follow to give him the best chance. He seems very week and can only lie on his side or back but he does move around a little every so often a peeps and opens his eye if you open the bator.
Thanks in advance
Mike

Actually that should dry up and heal fine as long as you keep the duckling in clean environment. by now you can offer some water to your duckling and hopefully you have some poultry vitamins to add to the water which will give the little one a boost. How is the lil one doing this afternoon? If you have some betadine you can mix some with a little warm water [looking like weak tea] and slowly dribble it over the scab.

Thanks for your reply. He's loads stronger today!! :) still very shaky on his feet tho. How long do you think till he can walk? I've got no vitamins to offer but he's had some weak sugar and water solution. He has had a poo which is good I guess. I'll try him on some food this morning

usually 24 hrs after hatch you can offer water and feed, they may not be interested but especially the water would be good, not cold though room temp. and don't continue to offer the sugar water it's used when first shipped ducklings have gone for a few days with out drinking just to get them started and give them some energy, If you have a TSC close by poultry vitamins are carried there. always good to have on hand when hatching. It may take a couple days before it get it legs under it, what do you have the little one on? the rubber shelf liner is good because they can get traction anything slick isn't, also old clean towels work well. How is the lil one this afternoon.
