I have a 22week old buff Orpington. I’ve soaked her, put Vaseline on it and gently pushed it back in. It came back out about 10 minutes later. I then read to put honey on it before gently pushing it back in so I did that. There’s white ooze slightly and dark areas that I thought was poo, but couldn’t get it off. There’s now a hint of blood when it came back out before I put it back in. I just checked her and it’s already starting to come back out again after 5-10 minutes. I’m a first season mom and I just want my girls healthy. Pic is after I soaked her this afternoon.

When you first discovered the prolapse, had the other hens been pecking at it? It looks a bit scabby next to the vent and prolapse. They can peck and damage the vent when they see the red prolapse tissue. I would soak her in warm water with a bit of Dawn or some Epsom salts once a day for about 15 minutes to soften and promote healing to the vent. Gently rub the dark areas toward the end of the soak to try and debride it. Keep it clean in between soaks with a warm damp cloth. Keep it from drying out with either honey, cream, ointment. It can take days to mire than a week for some prolapses to go back inside. Sometimes there can be an egg coming or blocking the vent. A human calcium tablet with vitamin D daily may help. Let us know how she gets along. Others may chime in.

I haven’t seen any pecking, but that doesn’t mean it hasn’t happened. I do have her in a kennel in our garage. I haven’t seen her eat or drink (water has vitamins and electrolytes in it), but she hasn’t been in there long. What is the best way to give the calcium w D?
