Hi,
My Buff orpington hens are just stadting to lay but last night i found 1 of our hens had a major prolapse. Upon examining it, i could tell the egg was still inside of the prolapse, but hanging out of the hen.
So carefully i lubed up and put it back into the hen. I could also feel another egg behind the one in the prolapse.
I braught her home and gave her a warm bath, and she now in a dark wooden box. I dont think shes tried to lay yet. But her prolapse keeps popping back out, minus the egg. The still hasnt laid and I'm not sure if she's even pooping.
Advise please? Shes not walking and not a happy chook. (Understandably).

Can you give your hen 1/2 human calcium tablet or Tums orally? That may help increase muscle tone to lay the egg. I would lube the prolapse and try to work the egg out of the tissue. Here is a video to watch:

Thanks so much for the vid. on day 3 now. She is pooping but prolapsing every time so im cleaning the poop off her. She hasnt tried to lay yet but is eating and drinking. She's currently in a wooden crate in my bedroom in the dark. Going to try epson salts in a bath later to see if that helps too. If she manages to lay, is this likely to happen every time she has an egg?
So worried about her! :'(

I dont have acess to tums or calcium tablets but i have given her more crushed shells... her bath seemed to help in that her prolapse has gone down- but i couldn't soak off all the weird white stuff. Not sure if it's healed skin or really caked on poop. Going to bathe her again later. I squirted a little oil up her vent too- hopefully that will soften the right places.

Update- thanks for all the advice- it proved very helpful- she is absolutely fine and laying every 3 days! I kept her at home in a quiet place under a dark heat lamp, bathed her in epsom salts nightly and after a few days she was pooping without any prolapsing, so a few more days and i returned her to the coop. a few days later and she laid! It was a rather large egg to be fair- all the other hens laid small eggs to begin with then gradually theyve increased in size. But I'm happy to report she's fully recovered. Thanks for all the advice guys! I fear she would have died without your help! x
